A new study conducted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) was commissioned by the U.S. Department of Energy to identify future cost competitiveness of renewable energy in the West. The study found that by 2025, wind and solar electricity generation could become cost competitive with traditional energy sources without subsidies. The study takes a focused look at the West’s most productive renewable resource areas, and compares the cost of generation without subsidies to those of natural-gas fired generators.
