President Obama signed an Executive Order to cut the Federal Government's greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent from 2008 levels, saving taxpayers $18 billion in energy costs. The initiative increases the share of electricity the Federal Government uses from renewable sources to 30 percent by 2025.
Following the signing at the White House, the President traveled to the Department of Energy to tour the building’s rooftop solar panels and to host a meeting with executives from some of the largest Federal suppliers to discuss how their new and existing GHG reduction targets are helping address climate change, while at the same time helping their company’s bottom line by reducing energy costs.
This strong move is another example of how the President is following through with the commitment he made in China last year to reduce economy-wide emissions 26-28 percent by 2025. In his remarks today, the President made it clear we can continue growing our economy while at the same time doing what is right for the environment and tackling climate change.
