The Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) is Hawaii’s premier energy technology and policy research, development and deployment organization, located in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM), HNEI conducts research and policy analysis of state, national and international importance to develop, test and evaluate innovations in renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies and deployment strategies. The Institute leverages its in-house work with public-private partnerships in the U.S. and abroad to demonstrate real-world operations and enable integration of emerging technologies and policy approaches. Founded in 1974, HNEI’s role in addressing Hawaii’s critical energy needs was established by statute in 2007.
