Governor Northam has announced changes to Virginia’s lead agency advancing policies and programs in clean energy: the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy is now the Virginia Department of Energy.
The name change was approved by the General Assembly and signed by Governor Northam in April 2021, and went into effect on October 1, 2021. It follows the 2020 Virginia Clean Economy Act, which established a mandatory renewable portfolio standard of 30 percent renewable energy by 2030, a mandatory energy efficiency resource standard, and the direction for a carbon-free electric grid by 2045.
More information on the name change and reorganization is available in Governor Northam’s press release.
