On October 13, 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $7 billion to launch seven Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs) across the country. Funded through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), these hubs will accelerate the deployment of clean hydrogen and serve as a network of producers, consumers, and infrastructure. According to DOE, the H2Hubs are expected to collectively produce three million metric tons of hydrogen annually and reduce 25 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions from end-uses each year. The selected hubs that will enter negotiations with DOE are:
- Appalachian Hydrogen Hub (Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub; West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania)
- California Hydrogen Hub (Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems; California)
- Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub (HyVelocity; Texas)
- Heartland Hydrogen Hub (Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, and Wisconsin)
- Mid-Atlantic Hydrogen Hub (Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub; Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey)
- Midwest Hydrogen Hub (Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen; Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan)
- Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub (PNWH2; Washington, Oregon, and Montana)
