From December 11-12, 2024, the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO), National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC), and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory hosted State Energy Offices, public utility commissions, and utility consumer advocates in Charlotte, North Carolina, for the NASEO-NARUC Training for States on Integrated Distribution System Planning 2.0: Planning for Electrification and Distributed Energy Resources. The training included technical courses, peer-sharing, office hours with trainers, and a half-day state action planning workshop. Key topics discussed include the following:
- Distribution planning policies, utility guidance, and regulatory issues
- Forecasting loads and DERs
- Distribution planning modeling
- Distribution planning with DERs: integration and valuation
- Considering equity and engaging stakeholders
- Distribution planning for transportation electrification and EV rate design
- Distribution planning for building electrification
- Coordination across planning processes
The workshop also included a site visit to the EPRI laboratory in Charlotte, North Carolina. Participants had the opportunity to explore the Transmission and Distribution Infrastructure Lab, learning more about advanced conductor technology with the ability to see the materials in person. Additionally, attendees visited the EPRI Cyber and Digital Instrumentation lab.
The next NASEO-NARUC Training for States on Integrated Distribution System Planning 2.0: Planning for Electrification and Distributed Energy Resources will take place March 11-12, 2025, in Detroit, Michigan.
