The nation’s transportation system is largely reliant on a single fuel source – petroleum – which is often subject to supply disruptions caused by natural and man-made disasters. Having a diverse set of fuels, vehicles, and other transportation options will lead to greater resilience of our transportation system. To support these efforts, NASEO has created a series of resources designed to aid State Energy Offices and other emergency management entities in examining the potential costs, benefits, and interdependencies associated with diversifying their fleets, reducing dependence on petroleum, and investing in electric, natural gas, propane, and biodiesel vehicles and infrastructure in support of energy security.
Motorweek’s National Preparedness Month: the Role of AFVs in Emergencies
- States continue to consider resilience when developing alternative fuel plans. For example, in coordination with National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the University of South Florida, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services released the Florida Alternative Transportation Fuel Resilience Plan in December 2022.
- Southeast REVI launched a multi-state EV infrastructure map to enable coordination across the region on EV infrastructure investments. The map includes hurricane evacuation routes to inform states on existing EV infrastructure gaps and opportunities for EV infrastructure installation along emergency routes and priority corridors.
