On October 2, 2025, the Kentucky Nuclear Energy Development Authority (KNEDA) issued a request for proposals (RFP) seeking projects that advance the technological development and economic growth of the nuclear energy sector in Kentucky. The funding aims to stimulate job opportunities, strengthen local economies, and drive workforce training. A total of $8 million is available through the Nuclear Energy Development Grant Program, with individual awards of up to $2 million possible.
In 2025, Governor Andy Beshear signed Senate Bill 179, establishing the Nuclear Energy Development Grant Program. KNEDA, established by the 2024 Kentucky General Assembly and administratively linked to the University of Kentucky’s Center for Applied Energy Research, will administer the grant. Kenya Stump, Executive Director of the Kentucky Office of Energy Policy, contributed to the working group whose recommendations ultimately led to KNEDA’s formation. Kentucky also serves as a leading co-chair of the Advanced Nuclear First Mover Initiative, a consortium of states collaborating with the private sector, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to advance next-generation nuclear technologies and strengthen the reliability, sustainability, and economic vitality of the nation’s electric grid.
